Making connections between what is learned in the classroom and its relevance to future careers is essential to preparing youth for post-high school career choices. Ohio law requires school boards of education of each city, local, exempted village, and joint vocational school district to adopt a policy on career advising and student success plans for students identified as at risk for dropping out of high school.

The Career Advising division of the State Support Team 7 website offers instructional resources and supports for educational partners, families, and community members to aspire students, as early as in kindergarten a career pathway available to them such as the workforce, post-secondary training or military.

Guiding Principles

Ohio’s strategic plan for education Each Child, Our Future aids to ensure each child is challenged to discover and learn, engaged to pursue fulfilling post-high school paths, and empowered to become an active contributing member of society.

Ohio’s One Goal outlined in the strategic plan seeks to ensure all students are enrolled in a post-high school learning experience, serving in a branch of the military, earning a living wage or engaged in a meaningful self-sustaining vocation within one year of high school graduation.

Strategy 10 of the strategic plan further inspires the need to ensure that all students are on a pathway to graduation and post-high school success. Through an intentional and integrated career advising approach centered approach, students are better prepared to pursue a post-secondary career path.
